£800
An exceptionally rare 19th century embroidered picture: a true reflection of social history, showing a parlour scene, worked in different materials and with great detail; seated, two ladies wearing shawls, bonnets and jackets, and a young man, again in outdoor attire, standing behind, an older man in overcoat, waistcoat scarf and hat, a cat and kitten play by their feet, a young boy eavesdropping at the door listening to what looks to be an uncomfortable gathering. The background is a mixture of silk fabric and embroidery, mainly the walls, ceiling and cupboard panels, with artefacts and utensils applied or stitched in relief, such as the clock, the basket to the right, the violin, the table tops, the hatchet, candle, nicknacks and most importantly, the five embroidered pictures top centre, silk embroidered scenes on cream silk, featuring countryside activities with buildings, people and animals, each approx.3 cm by 2.5 cm, attention being placed on perspective, particularly the ceiling and carpet, wood frame, glazed, gold slip, approx. 51 cm square including the frame. (Shipping category F)
Frame: the wood veneer is chipped in a couple of places. The embroidery is really as new.
It was bought from a London fair over 30 years ago
