CHATEAU MARGAUX 1ER GRAND CRU CLASSE 1961 1 Bottle 75cl
Level: Mid Shoulder. One of the greatest vintages of the last century. Approaching pensionable age at 63! Still showing fair colour - imagine what it was like in youth. Stand for several days, open carefully, don't decant and pour immediately! Savour in the minutes before it is likely to fade!
This bottle is offered for auction by a Yorkshire Wine Merchant - now retired, and purchased in the mid ’60’s on release from the Chateau. It has been stored in the same location for for 40 years until it was involved in one house move. It has previously been offered and stored at Morphets’ premises in Harrogate returned to vendor and now re-offered. The colour still appears quite vibrant but the level is mid-shoulder - not surprising for it’s age and history. The cork appears sound with slight corrosion to the capsule and the label is “bin soiled” consistent with the storage in a cool “northern” location. This vintage was produced by the then owner Ginestet in, what is now regarded, as an “old fashioned” style for the era. The wine will be fully mature and this bottle, in this condition will, as suggested in the sale notes, fade on exposure to air.
