19th century and Edwardian costume: a late 19th century candy pink silk two piece ensemble, the bodice with lightly scooped neck, the sleeves gathered, falling into a ruffle at the elbow, boned, front fastening trimmed with cream lace with coloured flowers, pleated waist sash, inside waist belt, skirt slightly trained with second layer, frilled, to the knee, garments lined in cream satinized cotton; together with another two piece gown with woven label attributing it to A & L Thorpe, costumiers, 117 Westborne Grove, London , with a crown and shield stating furs and mantles, and a further declaration that “The correct pattern of this costume REGISTERED, so that others can be made without further fitting”, created in a similar style to the first, the bodice in black silk satin, asymmetric, trimmed with cream chiffon and machine lace with the design in black, sleeve ruffles, boned, beadwork to the shoulders and diamanté to the pleated sash fastening, matched with a very full plain silk satin skirt, trained (4) (Shipping category D)
Bodice of first item: Sleeves relined concealing light discoloration, which does not come through to the exterior, some light wear to the silk where hooks have caught. The skirt hem has been caught and torn very centre back. The cream chiffon on the bodice of item two has a few tiny holes, mostly obscured by pleating.
