Marcel Pinas Suriname (b 1971), Abstract Composition, symbols from the Afaka script, and other elements reflecting the Maroon culture, oil on canvas, 150cmx 85cm.

Marcel Pinas was born in the district of Marowijne and around 1987 went on to study at the Nola Hatterman Institute. During this time the Suriname Guerilla War raged and the Maroon culture was all but wiped out. In 1997, Marcel Pinas was given a government scholarship to continue his studies at the Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica. This opened his eyes to real purpose of his art - to give 'his people' and their cultural a voice through his work. This awakening drastically , changed his work of which these two canvases are examples, his work is reminiscent of other Latin American and Cuban artists, including Jean-Michael Basquiat.

More Information

Both of the Pinas pieces were bought from a gallery in the South of France - https://beddingtonfineart.com/ - the owners lived close by and fell in love with his work. We believe they remain in contact with the artist.
