Gordon Bottomley (1874-1948) was born in Keighley and later moved to Cartmel, then Silverdale. He was a prominent figure in the Georgian Poetry Movement just before and during the First World War. His poetry and plays were widely published and he was a great writer of letters, counting among his friends Paul Nash, Edward Thomas, Charles Ricketts, Dame Sybil Thorndike, John Masefield and others.
