Probably a young female, Endemic to the Seychelles, the Aldabra giant tortoise is one of the largest in the world. Historically giant tortoises were found on many of the Western Indian Ocean islands but in the 17th to 19th centuries, they became a food source for sailors who captured and held them on board as a source of fresh meat. Numbers declined and eventually became extinct on many of the islands with the exception of those on the Aldabra atoll.
